This isn't to take away from Reaper though and trying to compare one to the other is going to differ based on the person's musical goal and what type of music they are wanting to make.Tips, tricks, and honest community help for the simplest of problems you may be having no matter if you're a newb or a master. You can't say that for Reaper, but you also have to take the price into consideration. You can download Suite and have everything you need to make a professional sounding song right off the bat with what's in there. You can't discount all of the included plugins and instruments either. You'd have to buy a separate sampler in order to compete with Ableton in that area and even then it wouldn't be the same. Not to mention how many options and filters are available all within the one plugin with no need to export and reload the sample. With Ableton you can set warp markers anywhere inside the sample, tempo match it extremely easily and overall accomplish things much faster and more efficiently inside of the sampler when manipulating it. You'd go kind of mad trying to do in Reaper what you can with Ableton's built in sampler unless you're a master at Reaper already and can quickly navigate the extra steps and deal with the inconveniences. In Ableton it makes it feel like you're "playing" your music when recording it and not just hitting midi notes. Why? Because it's a great DAW with a fantastic suite of included plugins matched with the ease of use and integration of its elements. That's my incredibly opinionated opinion anyway. ![]() ![]() It wouldn't be super fun to try tracking or mixing an album with it. Then you get all that aforementioned integration goodness for running a show too. The fact that you CAN make music with Live is kind of secondary to its existence in the live arena, but you can make pattern-based or loop-based music with VSTs and the built-in mixer, and as a result use it as a live performance tool for the same music. It's not really a composer's tool though. It's great for studio work from tracking to mixing as well. Reaper does a lot of the live recordings at those same shows, and it's very easy to set up and crank out a mix afterwards. Video for screens in and around the stage, tracks, SMPTE, lyrics sync with ProPresenter etc, MIDI messaging for things like keyboards and guitar rigs, even lighting sometimes. They keep everything in sync for the show. Live + QLab together basically run all the big touring shows nowadays. The fact that there's a little crossover capability confuses people sometimes. They are intended for totally different applications. We'd love to hear what you have produced with Reaper, but please post it in the weekly sticky.
